RuPaul Makes Herstory With Most Emmy Wins for a Black Artist
"For you kids out there watching, you have a tribe that is waiting for you!"
This year’s Emmys was one for the herstory books.
When RuPaul took home his sixth-straight win for Outstanding Host of RuPaul’s Drag Race at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys, he ended the evening tied with cinematographer Donald A. Morgan as the most-Emmy awarded Black artist ever with 11 wins. The Supermodel of the World quickly surpassed that tally when Drag Race won Outstanding Reality Competition Program at the Primetime Emmy Awards this Sunday (September 19).
When their win was announced, Ru, his best friend Michelle Visage, and Drag Race Season 13 queens Gottmik and Symone took the stage to accept the award. Ru thanked World of Wonder, ViacomCBS, the Television Academy, and “all of you gorgeous people here tonight.”
“Thanks to all our lovely children on our show from around the world,” he added. “They are so gracious to tell their stories of courage and how to navigate this difficult life, even more difficult today. This is for you. And for you kids out there watching, you have a tribe that is waiting for you. We are waiting for you, baby! Come on to Mama Ru! Thank you so much! Thank you!”
In addition to Outstanding Reality Competition Program and Outstanding Host, RuPaul’s Drag Race took home Emmys for Outstanding Casting For A Reality Program, Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program, and Outstanding Picture Editing For A Structured Reality Or Competition Program. Untucked also snatched a trophy for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.
