Joint message from the ONU Human Rights in the Americas and the CIDH for the LGBTIQ+ Pride Day

The presences in the Americas of the ONU Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) express their concern about the increase in stigmatizing narratives that incite hatred, legitimize discrimination or even incite non-prejudice-based violence against LGBTIQ+ people . This language is developed by certain groups and leaderships in political, community, religious and media areas, generating stereotypes, preconceptions and causing siege against LGBTIQ+ people and against those who defend their rights, also in electoral periods and political tensions.

There is concern with acts of violence against defenders of human rights of the LGBTIQ+ population who are attacked, threatened, harassed, imprisoned and/or arbitrarily detained and who are exposed to defamation campaigns.

The high rates of impunity in cases of discrimination and violence, as well as discriminatory declarations made by authorities, create a space that encourages the perpetuation of violence against LGBTIQ+ people.

We call on States to publicly challenge narratives of hate in public discourse and to call on them for their obligation to enact laws that prohibit discrimination against any group of people. At the same time, we urge States to investigate acts of violence promptly, seriously, and impartially, and to consider sexual orientation, gender identity/expression and sexual characteristics, and defense efforts as possible motivations for these acts.

We recognize the particular vulnerability in which trans, non-binary and gender diverse people are found and we reaffirm our commitment to work together with the States in action that promote the legal recognition of gender identity, in accordance with the rights of all people. identity at a level of equality and non-discrimination, as well as rights to privacy and freedom of expression.

Finally, we express our solidarity with the struggles of LGBTI people and we celebrate the activism that has advanced in the construction of a safer, fairer and more equal world.

The CIDH is a principal and autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OEA), whose mandate is provided by the Charter of the OEA and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote the observance and defense of human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body of the OEA on the matter. The CIDH is made up of seven independent members who are elected by the General Assembly of the OEA in a personal capacity and do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
