In an era where anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric is escalating, a historical number of corporations are proving to be true allies. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s latest Corporate Equality Index (CEI) showcases a workforce that is more allied than ever before. The CEI, a benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBTQIA+ equality, has witnessed participation skyrocket from 319 businesses in its first year to 1,384 in the latest survey, with results indicating overwhelming positivity.
“A record-breaking 95 percent of businesses reviewed now have non-discrimination policies that specifically address gender identity,” reported the CEI. This is a significant leap from just 5 percent in 2002. Moreover, a substantial 70 percent offer transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage, up from none in the same year.
HRC President Kelley Robinson remarked on the findings, “In a time when LGBTQIA+ individuals face adversaries hoping to eradicate our identity and push us back in the closet, it appears businesses aren’t buying it.”
The CEI also observed that 70 percent of rated businesses have proactive guidelines to support employees undergoing gender transition, their managers, and coworkers. Of those businesses, 545 scored a perfect 100 and will be recognized with the HRC’s Equality 100 Award as Leaders in LGBTQIA+ Workplace Inclusion.
The wide array of companies achieving this accolade includes renowned names like Apple Inc., AMC Entertainment, Dominos Pizza Inc., and Google Inc., each exemplifying the commitment to diversity and inclusion that spans various sectors of the economy.
Rashawn Hawkins, HRC’s Senior Director of Workplace Equality, commented on the significance of these advancements, “For over two decades, businesses have played a pivotal role in advancing LGBTQIA+ equality by centering employee needs and voices when it comes to workplace inclusion.”
The unwavering commitment of these businesses to LGBTQIA+ equality, especially amidst growing societal challenges, highlights the critical role the corporate sector plays in fostering an inclusive environment for all employees. The HRC Foundation’s CEI stands as a testament to the positive impact and continuous efforts of the business community in upholding equity and inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ populace.
