NewJeans, the K-pop girl group, has achieved a remarkable feat by debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with their new mini album “Get Up”. This achievement, announced by Billboard on August 2, marks the group’s first-ever entry into the Billboard 200, making them the fastest female K-pop group to reach this milestone.
Following BLACKPINK, NewJeans is only the second female K-pop group to top the Billboard 200. Interestingly, “Get Up” and BLACKPINK’s 2022 album “BORN PINK” are the only albums by all-female groups to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the past 15 years. The last girl group to achieve this was Danity Kane in 2008.
Including both male and female artists, NewJeans is the sixth K-pop artist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200, joining the ranks of BTS, SuperM, Stray Kids, BLACKPINK, and TXT.
According to Luminate, formerly known as Nielsen Music, “Get Up” earned a total of 126,500 equivalent album units in the week ending on July 27. The mini album’s total score was made up of 101,500 traditional album sales and 24,500 streaming equivalent album (SEA) units, which equates to 34.39 million on-demand audio streams for the week. The EP also accumulated 500 track equivalent album (TEA) units in its first week.
In addition to their Billboard 200 success, NewJeans also made an impressive debut on Billboard’s Hot 100, which ranks the most popular songs in the United States. Two new songs from “Get Up”, “ETA” and “Cool With You”, entered the chart at No. 81 and No. 93 respectively. Furthermore, their hit pre-release single “Super Shy” climbed to a new peak of No. 48 in its third consecutive week on the chart, marking NewJeans’ highest ranking on the Hot 100 to date.
With these achievements, NewJeans has become the first female K-pop artist in history to chart three songs simultaneously on the Hot 100. This is a testament to the group’s growing popularity and the global appeal of their music.
