He opened his 30-date tour in Detroit on Wednesday (7 September) and, after an audience member posted a video of the performer ‘devouring’ choreography to the ballroom-inspired track, fans have gone wild.
The video, complete with hilarious commentary from the fan filming, features the “Call Me by Your Name” singer and his backup dancers voguing, duckwalking and getting their lives to the penultimate track from Beyoncé’s Renaissance, which was heavily inspired by queer and trans ballroom trailblazers.
Lil Nas X did not have to DEVOUR his first show, but he DID!!! He really vogued to Pure/Honey and I got my ENTIRE LIFE!! He did THAT!!! #LongLiveMontero pic.twitter.com/Tm3f4EdZzl

The same Twitter user praised the performer’s authenticity and visibility in the music industry, adding: “Also, a BIG shoutout to Lil Nas X for putting on an amazing show! Seeing a Black gay man being his authentic self is what we fucking need in this industry! An icon in the making!“
Other fans reacted to the video with equal enthusiasm.
One wrote: “It warms my heart to see this much of Black, queer excellence”, another said: “He’s taking it!”

Another Twitter user emphasised how amazing it is to see a queer artist living as authentically themselves: “When Lil Nas X came out people said was coming out too early or for attention. But LOOK at how he can be UNAPOLOGETICALLY himself.
“You can never do that too soon”
Lil Nas X previously joked that he was trying to get children’s entertainment group The Wiggles to co-headline on the tour; we just hope they can vogue.
